Now that we have more riders returning our group(s) are increasing in size.
Ride Protocol for Whoever is leading as we come to a roundabout and/or intersections where this is not a stop sign;
1- do NOT increase speed, in fact you may slightly decrease speed to be able to assess the traffic situation.
2- scan the traffic situation and consider that you have other riders behind you when determining if ALL can come through the roundabout together (know how many riders are in your group). It is better staying together, when possible, otherwise those that go through will need to slow enough to let the rest of the group catch up.
3- verbally state what you are doing (rolling, stopping, slowing, car left, car up etc.) and give a hand signal if you can.
4- ride defensively. Consider that drivers do not know the rules of the roundabout, and may not see a cyclist as easily as a car.
5- if a car stops in a roundabout to signal us through do NOT go. If a car stops at an intersection and signals us through the group may do so after considering the rest of the traffic.
6- Do NOT change lanes in a roundabout. For Example, if you are going 3/4 around the circle you are in the left lane, stay in that lane until all riders have completed the circle and the sweep takes it first and says "take the lane". You may have to stay in that lane until the traffic clears. Wait, use your mirror and listen for instructions from the sweep.
7- this is a group ride, not a race.
Adherence to club rules helps ensure safety for all riders. As a member, you have agreed to comply. We appreciate your participation and look forward to a fun season of cycling in and around The Villages.
